How To Develop an Internet Product Quickly and Effectively, A Hackathon.

Posted by leilaergo on January 17, 2011

Tangelo just finished hosting the first Tangelo Startup House of 2011 in Argentina. From January 5th through the 13th the Tangelo team gathered  in the city of Buenos Aires where we were hacking internet products for two straight weeks. In order to deliver in such a short period of time, we needed a framework to help us cut through the noise and deliver a working prototype. For software development we use Agile methodologies but when you want to build a product that eventually can become a profitable business, there are many more things to consider beyond software development. In all honesty, the development of the code is probably the last step in a series of events. Continue reading “How To Develop an Internet Product Quickly and Effectively, A Hackathon.” »

How Twitter Jump-Started The Entrepreneurial Spirit in Argentina and Latin America

Posted by bochenn on November 10, 2010

Written by Leila Ergo. Twitter’s massive growth is undeniable. This tremendous growth has sparked unintended but welcomed side-effects for technology entrepreneurs in Latin America and the U.S. hispanic business community. The business side-effects of Twitter adoption is what we are going to touch upon in this post.

There’s no better way of doing this than sharing a success story that grew from Twitter and has blossomed into an energetic technology startup community in Buenos Aires and now is expanding and building a strong relationship with the Silicon Valley. But first let’s get to the basics to understand how Twitter’s growth helped ignite the entrepreneurial spirit in Latin America.

We are hoping that this post will provide background on why Argentina is tremendously fertile ground to build a global technology startup as well.

How Latin American Presidents Use Twitter for Good and Evil and Why

Posted by bochenn on November 10, 2010

Written by Leila Ergo and Antonio Altamirano. This is the first of a series of posts analyzing the impact of Social Media in Latin America .

As discussed in a previous post, Twitter is growing fast in Latin America. Just as in other markets, Twitter’s growth has been mainly due to celebrities joining Twitter thus driving their fans to join in order to connect with their favorite celebrities.

But there’s now a huge factor that is unique to South America and that is quickly becoming a massive adoption driver for Twitter. Heads of State are joining Twitter and using it for good, evil or both. Not all presidents use Twitter in the same way or for the same purpose and not all presidents have achieved the same level of response from their people. Probably due to a lack of authenticity and transparency in their delivery style, but we will let you derive your own conclusions.

Let’s start by looking at  Venezuela, Chile and Argentina. The Presidents of these countries have a verified Twitter account and are actively using it.

Latin America and The Online Video Renaissance

Posted by bochenn on November 10, 2010

Tania Yuki, Director of Cross Media & Video Products at comScore, unveiled new research analyzing the online video industry in Latin America, focusing in Argentina. The results of this analysis have been surprising to many as Latin America is often seen as a market difficult to monetize. Skeptics, be prepared to be humbled.

Online Video in Latin America:

Video viewers as a percentage of web visitors in many countries in South America is higher than in the U.S. However, the amount of videos and hours per viewer is lower. This higher percentage of video viewers is remarkable nonetheless. Take into consideration that reliable access to the internet is relatively recent compared to the US. Also, this could be a cross-border cultural phenomenon as latinos abroad and in the US are deeply engaged with telenovelas, a habit that is not linked to media channel like the TV but to convenience. Younger adults find internet video much more convenient than TV channels filled with endless commercials. Tivo is not present there yet.

Google Instant: Reframing The Social Web

Posted by bochenn on November 10, 2010

The “Instant” web is here. Google’s stroke of genius is inspiring innovative mashups that are easy to build and social search is the perfect problem to solve. Social has been suffering (or evolving – depending on whether you are an optimist or realist) from a lack of true innovation as the barriers to entry makes it simpler for startups to address smaller market issues.

Twitter, Facebook and a sleuth of social startups and consultancies are hard at work attempting to solve the issue of social search. The information shared across social networks is often fleeting and highly relevant to a small group of people yet it can have massive reach. The problem is big and the payoff for a solution is definitely compelling to entrepreneurs.

Nuevo Twitter: Más Social, más rapido y más cerca de aniquilar a aplicaciones de terceros

Posted by bochenn on November 10, 2010

Online Video Market Remains Underserved: U.S. Latinos Eagerly Waiting To Consume.

Posted by bochenn on November 10, 2010

The Latino population in the United States represents a large proportion of the population. Over 70% of US-Latinos have internet access. US-Latinos have the need to connect with other people because of culture and cross-border family ties. One of the main online activities of this group of people is watching online videos.

More and more US-Latinos who speak and understand English prefer websites in English. There are very few online marketing activities aimed at this demographic that is redefining mainstream behavior.

Let’s dig deeper.

Lots of people and few purchases are marking the launch of the iPad and the iPhone4 in Latin America

Posted by bochenn on November 10, 2010

Written by Leila Ergo. In September, Apple decided to launch its latest products in two major markets: China and Latin America.

With the same excitement and enthusiasm as the Harry Potter books, last Friday at midnight, hundreds gathered for the official launch of Wi-Fi iPad and Wi-Fi +3 G in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru; exactly one week after that, the iPhone 4 was also launched in those countries.

Last Friday, more than 250 Apple fans waited in front of the shops for the launch of the iPad. Armando Ortega, Business Executive Development Mexico, told several media sources that he did not expect this reaction from the public, despite knowing that the event would generate a lot of hype. The same striking scene was present for the launch of the iPhone 4.

In Chile, for example, more than 100 people at midnight on Thursday came to the stores to buy the new smartphone. Last week, the company Movistar Chile enabled a site to give information and to book the iPhone 4; an astounding 12,000 people enrolled in a week.

These events represent some of the most important technology events of 2010 in Latin America. However, the hundreds of Apples fans have yet to be reflected in sales in any country. The astronomical  prices of  Apple’s latest products have most of the public stumped.

Here are some prices:

For example, the price in Chile of the more accessible ipad (WiFi only) is $500. Argentina and Peru have the highest prices: between 60% – 70% higher than in the United States.

Prices for the 16 GB iPhone 4 are more in tune with the U.S. price. For example, in Argentina, an iPhone 4 costs between $500 and $700 and in Chile between $ 330 and $ 430.

Many people and few purchases are marking the launch of the new Apple devices.

Without a doubt, the new products have many advantages in terms of technology but because of its high prices, it will be hard to achieve popularity. On one hand, the group of people that can afford these luxury devices is small. Also, in the first half of the year, sales of Apple’s iPhone achieved only 7% of total smartphone sales, behind RIM’s BlackBerry (39%), Android (25%) and Symbian (23%).

Under this context, it is difficult to predict the success or failure of these new two Apple devices in the Latino market.

A curiosity: In some countries people have the possibility of acquiring the iPad or the iPhone 4 by paying with credit card in 36 installments without interest; however, you should keep in mind that within 3 years it is highly likely that Apple’s products will be better than today’s products. Yet another reason to be weary about Apple’s success beyond the rich countries of the world.
